It’s always a crapshoot when actors attempt to switch roles with musicians. David Hasselhoff, Eddie Murphy and William Shatner achieved, at best, catastrophic results. It’s a risky business either way; but the bar is decidedly lower the other way around after Britney’s Crossroads and Mariah’s Glitter. Then there are the rare cases that transcend mediocrity.
This may be because half of L.A.-based indie-electro-pop duo Uh Huh Her is actually musician-turned-actor-turned-musician.
“I don’t think I’m that fascinating,” Leisha Hailey says, with the mock humility of someone who knows they are fascinating. It’s almost 8 p.m. at The Mod Club on a Friday in late May. Hailey and Camila Grey sit demurely on a couch side by side in a cramped upstairs dressing room, looking up expectantly like just-admonished schoolgirls trying not to giggle. There’s a reason for their good cheer. Uh Huh Her, formed only in January 2007, wraps up a sold-out North American tour with this show before heading to Japan.

Fresh air, are the two best words to describe the first full length album from Uh Huh Her, the Los Angeles based duo of Camila Grey and Leisha Hailey. Uh Huh Her has an authentic DIY electro indie pop sound that sets them apart from fellow electro bands like Ladytron and Portishead. Their new album released by their label Nettwerk, Common Reaction, slated for release on August 19th, offers a truly creative and original album you will have on repeat for a long time.
Uh Huh Her was originally formed in early 2007 by Leisha Hailey, formerly of the 90’s indie pop group, The Murmurs, and the later rock reincarnation known as Gush, Camila Grey, a session multi-instrumentalist who has worked with Dr. Dre and Melissa Auf Der Maur and is a former member of lo-fi band, Mellowdrone, and Alicia Warrington, a drummer who has worked with Lilix and Kelly Osbourne. The trio got their name from a PJ Harvey B-side track. They worked on their EP, I See Red, in mid-2007 and shortly before it’s release date Warrington left the group.
On their debut EP, I See Red, the band’s self described indie electro pop sound was formed. Reminiscent of The Cure, Coucteau Twins, and Depeche Mode, the duo effectively integrated simple bass lines, synth overlays and Grey’s seductive voice to make a great EP.
The “green room” at the Orpheum is ridiculously small. And disturbingly air-conditioning-free. There’s some original artwork on the walls, thanks to Sharpie markers, and a couple of haphazardly placed stools, should one tire of standing. In short, it’s nothing fancy.
Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey, whose band Uh Huh Her is set to appear before a sold-out Tampa crowd less than 45 minutes from now, seem unfazed by the less-than-posh conditions as they crowd one corner of the box, shoulders hunched and sharing an open bottle of Jack Daniels.
Uh Huh Her has been around for just over a year, but is already seeing a substantial amount of success.
“Our audiences are amazing,” says Leisha. “I feel so grateful that people are coming out to hear us. I never expected this reaction; I thought it would be a really underground thing. It’s completely crazy!”
And it’s not only the music that’s still in the growing stages.
