Waiting can be a pain, but patience has a way of sometimes making things work.
In the case of Camila Grey, one half of the brains behind Los Angeles electro-pop band Uh Huh Her, it involves finding the time to work with the band’s other core member.
It just happens that the other member is Leisha Hailey, formerly of The Murmurs but far more famous now for her role playing Alice Pieszecki on the hit Showtime series The L Word.
Grey says the notoriety associated with the show has been both a blessing and a curse for the group.
“It’s been amazing in that we have an immediate fan base that’s really supportive,” Grey says prior to a Norfolk, Va., show last week.
“At the same time it takes her away from the band and we’re unable to tour during the summer, or at least we haven’t been because she’s always shooting a show. So we’ve always had to put our touring on hold. Now I think with the free time it will be better.”
Uh Huh Her, named after the PJ Harvey song and performing tomorrow at The Mod Club, released their debut album, Common Reaction, in August.

Leisha Hailey, the sweet-as-sugar actress on “The L Word,” can pretty much do it all – act, play guitar, sing, sell breakfast food and be hot.
She’s also a journalist, albeit on a lesbian soap opera, so what reporter wouldn’t have shaky knees and enough forehead sweat to put out a forest fire? So we couldn’t resist asking: How did we do?
“You have a nice approach to how you ask questions,” the 37-year-old flatters. “I think the trick with the person doing the interview should be just making it feel like a conversation, which you do very well.”
Alice Pieszecki, the cute-as-a-kitten character Hailey portrays on the Showtime hit (which will begin its sixth and final season in January), would know best. Fans familiar with the show, about a lesbian, bi and transgender clique living in West Hollywood, know quirky Alice for “The Chart” – a graph documenting affairs among her friends and acquaintances, which she began on the back of a napkin during season 1. Most illuminating about her character is that she is – or was, rather – bisexual.

1. Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
-Mozart, Debussy, Samuel Barber, Thom Yorke, Bjork, Chryssie Hynde, Bernard Sumner from New Order, Annie Lennox
2. Camila- How did you get to work with artists like Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, and Kelly Osbourne?
Cam- When I got out of college I came to LA and immediately starting doing auditions for this guy in town that does everything for singers or bands looking for musicians. I guess I was decent so I got the job with Kelly. As for Dre, we had a mutual friend that brought me in, and we all got along really well. I started hanging out over there for fun and eventually Dre asked me to start singing on his demos for artists like Bus. Just recently I got to rap on something. That was weird.

Their music is raucously filled with slick synth, poppy guitar chords, and intrinsic lyrics. Uh Huh Her, comprised of Camila Grey, a former session musician and member of Mellowdrone, and Leisha Hailey, former half of nineties alt-rock duo, The Murmurs, and the rock band, Gush, makes their fun electro-infused debut on their new album, Common Reaction, released by their label Nettwerk Music.
Fortunately, I got to interview Camila Grey, half of Uh Huh Her, and ask her questions about their new album, who she would choose to tour with, and how she would describe their ever evolving sound.
Before I ask any questions I would just like to say the new album is amazing.
Oh thanks.
I guess I will just get started then. How do you think the band has evolved from your debut EP, I See Red, to your new album, Common Reaction?
Well, when we recorded the EP we were a baby band. I mean we recorded the vocals in a bathroom and produced the record ourselves. We were just swimming without a lifeboat playing shows with an iPod. All the things that you should be in a band went backwards for us. On the album, we had someone else produce it.
What was the transition from working as a session musician to co-fronting your own band like for you?
Definitely a huge change, I had to show up in ways I never had to before. There is a lot of multitasking, which is challenging and difficult.

With the amount of attention the charming gals of Uh Huh Her have been racking up recently, thanks to appearances on MTV’s The Hills and singer/bassist/keyboardist Leisha Hailey’s recent stardom on Showtime’s The L Word, the Los Angeles based group appears to be off to a very good start.
Now embarking on in its first full U.S. tour in support of its recently released debut album, Common Reaction, Uh Huh Her face its latest challenge: replicating the group’s stellar sounds in a live atmosphere. However, on Friday the electro-pop outfit waltzed into Norfolk, Virginia’s hotspot The NorVA completely as ease; adorned in fake tattoos, hopelessly adorable outfits and ready to rock out!
Approaching the venue, one couldn’t help but notice the overly zealous Christian protesters in the surrounding area, which seemed somewhat fitting considering the large demographic of lesbian attendees that evening. It became immediately apparent inside that the majority of the audience were fans of The L Word and the room slowly filled with budding lesbian couples and the like, for one hell of a girl’s night out!
