Interview: Gigsound

Gigsound met up with the brand new girls of Indie/Electro..UH HUH HER, more commonly known as, Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey. Tid sat down and grilled the girls on music..life and umm, Annie Lennox it would seem?! gigsoundinterview

Ok..where to begin? Shepherd’s Bush and Koko gig..alot of people. You both came on stage and looked kind of suprised..were you?
(Lots of laughter and smiles)
Leisha: Well..I mean it’s not often you experience something like that so..it was the balconies. We didn’t expect that part.
Camila: Yeah it was just going up. We were told originally there would be around 150 people, we got there and there were already 450 people and then we find out there were actually 1700, which is not bad considering you only had the EP at the time!!

Now the album..
Leisha: Yeah we finished it 5 or 6 days before we left.
What’s it called?
Camila: Common Reaction.
Who came up with that?
Camila: It’s a song title.
Oh right, so is it your favourite song off the album?
Leisha: No not really..it just kind of made sense for the whole album.
Ah, so it just worked!!

Say So got into the Top 30 on the iTunes Pop Chart?
(More laughter and smiles – Ed’s note “These girls are a pure joy to sit and talk with”)
Camila: Yeah it was so weird..it was the first song we ever wrote as a band so that’s cool.

11 tracks on the album and if you could only choose two of them for a very small gig what would you choose?
Leisha: I like playing So Long.
Camila: I like so long as well..that and Dance With Me. Those are our kind of two more energetic songs.
Leisha: Not A Love Song too though.
Camila: That’s three though.
Leisha: You picked one so I’ll pick one though, so that’s it.
Camila: Oh ok then. (laughter)

Now we finally saw Sparklehorse..your drummer Jordan?
Leisha: Yeah Jordan.
So where did you guys meet?
Leisha: Al Clay (Producer) said I have the perfect drummer if you don’t like this guy I’ll be shocked. He’s not a rock drummer, so he’s perfect and he kind of mimics a drum machine in a way?
Camila: Yeah..really musical.

Is there a difference in how you play together, compared to when, Camila you played with Mellowdrone and Leisha, The Murmurs?
Camila: Yeah there’s a huge difference..
Leisha: Well you’re out front now..
Camila: It’s so different being out there and it’s so weird, it’s like a five foot difference..but it makes a huge difference in how you feel. So that’s been, not a struggle for me but takes alot of getting used to.
Leisha how about for you?
Leisha: Yeah I mean The Murmurs, that was really kind of a fun..you know what I mean? It was a while ago..
Yeah the hairstyles were certainly different!
Leisha: Yeah they were VERY different..yeah I miss that hair sometimes.
*Camila giggling*

Right..pre-gig rituals or superstitions?
Camila: We’re still trying to establish our little routine..
Leisha: Yeah it depends on the backstage situation..like at Shepherd’s Bush, I ironed haha. Oh well, I suppose that calms the nerves?
Camila: Well yeah I get super nervous..I pace up and down.
Ok, well what’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you step on stage?
Leisha: I just wanna do a really good job..stay focused and entertain people.

Leisha, is life just one big party for you?
Leisha: Well yeah..we’re not party girls but we have fun, so much fun.
Also Leisha, were you a bit of a soccer (that’s football to us) player?
Leisha: You know what..I played at high school but now everyone thinks I’m a soccer pro or something. I mean I was good but..as if.
*Giggling starts to come from Camila*
Leisha: I was good.
Camila: Cool..
*Giggles*

Aww bless the girls, let’s leave them giggling as they’ve been brilliant today and we’ve had a great time getting to know Uh Huh Her that little bit better. Gigsound would like to thank, Leisha Hailey, Camila Grey and Laura from Nettwerk for helping make the interview happen.

This was a fun little interview. They sound like fun girls to talk to. I didn’t know Leisha played soccer in high school. I used to play in middle school. Honestly, I don’t like “So Long” or “Dance With Me,” but I guess they are probably better for a live show. Thanks for posting this interview.

They’re one of the best live. Especially ‘Dance With Me’. They really like rocking out at the end of that one and it sounds awesome.

Thanks for visiting the site, Cam!

I think i like so much more the ep and i’m glad they’re getting back to there roots..the ep was a little bit more dark, had some kind of mysterious/ethereal vibe there
